The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction – In short

The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction (SBI) is Sweden’s leading competence center for sustainable steel construction. As an independent organization with nearly 60 years of experience, we work to strengthen knowledge about steel as a building and structural material and to drive the industry forward through modern research, education, and technical development.

Our Mission

SBI promotes the increased use of steel within the construction sector — a material with extensive potential in sustainability, reuse, efficiency, and architectural freedom. By combining cutting‑edge research with practical experience, we contribute to innovative solutions that support a circular and resource‑efficient built environment.

What We Do

We work broadly to spread knowledge and strengthen the development of the steel construction industry:

  • Education and Seminars
We offer courses, webinars, and lectures that elevate competence in steel construction. Stålbyggnadsdagen (Steel Construction Day) is one of our flagship annual events and a key meeting place for the industry.

  • Technical Handbooks and Guidance
SBI produces independent handbooks and technical resources that make it easier to plan and design efficient and safe steel structures.
  • Information and Industry Dialogue
Through our own media channels, trade press contributions, newsletters, and collaborations, we provide up‑to‑date insights on the development of steel and steel construction — from engineering and research to sustainability issues and new regulations.
  • Our Magazine: Nyheter om Stålbyggnad
SBI publishes the professional magazine Nyheter om Stålbyggnad, offering in‑depth articles, analyses, and updates on developments within the Swedish and international steel construction industry. The magazine is issued four times per year and is distributed free of charge to approximately 7,000 subscribers, mainly in Sweden and Norway. The magazine serves as an important knowledge hub for engineers, architects, contractors, and decision‑makers.

For Companies: Engage in the Industry’s Development

Companies that want to take an active role in the development of Swedish steel construction research and the future of building can connect more closely with SBI through the Foundation for Swedish Steel Construction Research. Membership represents a small investment with major impact, offering the opportunity to influence industry developments and gain access to exclusive knowledge and networks in the Swedish market.
