By the 80s big increment of office building construction there was a demand for new and faster construction methods. The combination of steel beams and prefabricated concrete elements were already used in a several projects, and was now ready for bigger scale usage in the new office builing production. This construction method was furthermore developed and both consulting engineers and building contgractors have learned to use the advantages of this system. Today this method is totally dominating the Nordic market for new multi-storey buildings.
The basics of the construction method is a steel frame with steel columns and a welded steel beam with a wide lower flange, an omega profile (hat beam), in combination with prefabricated hollow core concrete elements. The system gives opportunities for large free spans and a low total flooring height.
The method makes it possible to quickly reach full height of the building and erect the roof in order to start the comprehensive interior works in a dry environment. The framing system can be completed with different types of exterior wall systems, and most commonly with light frame. The light-gauge steel wall post has started to challenge the traditional wooden post in external walls. The common roofing material on these kinds of buildings is often strip steel.
