Fire Risk Evaluation and Cost Benefit of Fire Protective Measures in Industrial Buildings
G Sedin, J Thor, 1979

The last years increased fire losses within industry accentuate the need of methods for economic optimisation of the fire protection in industrial buildings. Knowledge of the factors of significance for fire loss in industrial buildings will form the base for such optimisations and in the paper some factors of significans are recognized. The expected benefit to cost relationship on a national level as well as for individual objects of some fire protective measures are discussed. Finally some principles for evaluation of the overall fire risk in industrial buildings are discussed and the practical application of a functionally based method for such an evaluation is illustrated by some examples.

Recommendations for design of floors with respect to human induced vibrations -Background report
Helena Burstrand Knutsson Asko Talja Anders Ågren, 2003

The objective with this report is to increase the knowledge of human induced floor vibrations in light weight steel floors, in order to be able to increase the competitiveness of light steel framing for residential construction around the world. Since the interest and use of light steel components as structural elements in housing has increased and the floor structures become lighter and lighter there is a need for increased knowledge about light steel floors behaviour when loaded by human induced vibrations.

Human-induced vibrations in light steel floors
Junye Wang, Anders Ågren, 2003

This report presents current knowledge of the criteria for acceptance of vibrations in lightweight floors, and summarises the results of a test program performed during the five construction phases of a floor. The objective was to determine the vibration properties of as many aspects of the floor as possible using a limited number of measurements. Four test methods were therefore used:
1. Hammer impact measurements to find the resonance frequencies of the floor and their damping values.
2. Walking-induced vibration to evaluate acceleration in realistic situations.
3. Heel-drop induced vibrations to evaluate “worst case” vibrations.
4. Subjective evaluations to evaluate individual’s perceptions of walking-induced vibration in the floor.

Environmental impact assessment of steel bridges
Joakim Widman, 1998

Paper presented at the 2nd World Steel in Construction conference 1998.
The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction has made LCA´s on steel and concrete composite road bridges in order to detect important environmental impact parameters and to find areas where improvements are necessary. Two of the most common bridge types were studied. Combustion engines in vehicles contribute to a big share of the airbonre emissions. In spite of the small amounts, alloys as Molybdenum contributes to most enviromental burden from the materials according to one assessment method. This put steel in a less favourable position when comparing LCA results with other materials. The concrete in steel bridges contributes to almost 50% out of the environmental impact and the fact that steel bridges need less material than concrete bridges, shows that steel bridges are good environmental choises. Three assessment methods have been used to get multi-comparable and objective assessment results.

Light-gauge Steel Framing Leads the way to an Increased Productivity for Residential Housing
H Burstrand Knutsson, 1998

Paper presented at the 2nd World Steel in Construction conference 1998.
During the last five years, the building market has been very low in Sweden. At the same time the rather extensive governmental subsides were phased out. We are building less than 10 000 dwellings a year compared to 70 000 units in 1990. The reason for the building industry´s stagnation is mainly the result of adhering the old traditions. These old traditions are impeding development by the notion that the construction activities are a local concern with limited competition. The building process have been more a trade than an industry.
By using new information technology (IT) with model based 3D CAD combined with a material with small tolerances, the efficiency can rise. Light-gauge Steel Framing (LGSF) has shown the potential to build dwellings to lower costs with quality assurance from planning to use. By using a high lever of prefabrication the construction time can be significantly shorter and most important, the building costs can be strongly reduced.

Development of an environmental research strategy in Sweden
J Anderson, 1998

Paper presented at the 2nd World Steel in Construction conference 1998.
The development of an environmental research strategy in Sweden is driven by the individual consumers, environmental authorities, organisations and the market.
All building material producers and contractors in Sweden have voluntarily agreed to produce environmental fact sheets for their products. One of the most important parts of the content is LCA (Life Cycle Assessment).
In 1995 the Swedish Institute of Steel Construction decided to start a programme for environmental research. The strategy included six steps; analyse of the situation, building up personnel resources, creating networks, executing research and building up facts, influencing codes and finally dissemination of information.

Prediction of noise from railway bridges
J Anderson, 1998

Paper presented at the 2nd World Steel in Construction conference 1998.
The question about noise from railway bridges, has up till now often been a task for expensive actions after the bridge has been built. The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction has developed a prediction model for airborne sound in any point beside a bridge, and structureborne sound at any position on the bridge. The model utilises a computer programme based on SEA (Statistic Energy Analysis).
Possible bridges include steel, concrete and composite railway bridges, with or without ballast or sleepers. The model will be used to analyse and improve existing noisy bridges, to improve the bridge design, and to design "silent bridges".
One of the results is that in positions beside and under the studied bridges with closed decks, the contribution from the structureborne sound is small compared with the airborne sound.

Sound and Vibration Properties of Light-weight Floor Structures
H Burstrand, 1998

Paper presented at the Sustainable Steel conference in Orlando 1998.
In Sweden there are high requirements of sound insulation for apartment separating walls and floors. The highest requirements are optional, and the market more and more often requires this higher level of sound environment. The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction is doing a research development of a new building system together with the Swedish building industry with light-gauge steel as a basic platform. It is a challenge to develop apartment separating structures to fulfil even the higher optional requirements. When we have a structure with high sound quality, we know that we can use it in types of buildings even those which require high sound quality.

Heat transmission through walls with slotted steel U-girders
T Blomberg, 1998

An insulated wall can be supported internally by thin steel girders. There will be an extra heat loss caused by the metal U-girders perpendicular to the heat flow direction reduces this heat loss.
Calculation of the heat transmittance is a difficult numerical problem due to the high ratio of the thermal conductivity between the insulation and the steel.
The study presents results of calculations in three dimensions. The proper choice of the numerical mesh is discussed.
Simplified equations for the U-value are derived and implemented in a PC-program. The heat transmittance is quickly calculated for different parameters: thermal conductivity of insulation and steel, steel thickness, distance between girders, and additional insulated layers (with or without cross-laid steel grinders).

Structural Fire Design of Thin Walled Steel Sections
A Ranby, 1999

The aim of this thesis is to study the structural fire behaviour of thin walled steel sections; to find the actual steel temperature; how it varies across the steel sections and the phenomena of local buckling at elevated steel temperatures. The flexural buckling and torsional-flexural buckling load bearing resistances have also been studied. By using this information a method to design thin walled steel columns at elevated temperature has been developed.

Recyclability of Light-gauge Steel Studs
J Anderson et al, 1997

The report Recyclability of Light-gauge Steel Studs is a survey of the life cycle for a light-gauge steel stud at the Swedish Construction Market. It is based on correspondence and telephone interviews with representatives from the industry and universities. It includes experts on steel production, cold forming of steel, construction and so on, all the way to the demolition and recycling business.

With the resulting recycling yield, it is possible to take recyclability into account in studies of the enviromental impact, like LCA (Life Cycle Assesssment) and LCI (Life Cycle Inventory).
Although the survey is done for a light-gauge steel stud in Sweden, the same approach and probably most of the assumptions, can be used for any constructional product, in any markets.
